I first mapped out ideas for my long-term art project “Seirensho” in 1995. Fifteen years have passed since I started this project on Inujima, a very small island in the Seto Inland Sea, all the while keeping distance from centers of art such as New York and Tokyo. Recently, more and more remote islands have become sites for revitalization through “art.” For artists, however, art should not be the means but the end. Art Base Momoshima is a coexistence project initiated by committed artists for the benefit of local residents and their community. It is also a site to test the unrealized ideas and projects originally planned for the closed school on Inujima.

In addition to solo and group exhibitions, has worked on cultural resource regeneration public projects on islands in the Seto Inland Sea. These include the Inujima Art Project, Kosagijima BIO-Isle Project and ART BASE MOMOSHIMA. Currently lives in Hiroshima, and travels by Synapse, his beloved sailing boat, to the islands of the Seto Island Sea, many of which have no bridges.

Two years ago, I visited the Seto Inland Sea as an editorial designer for the publication “Inujima Note.” I revisited Seto Inland Sea, this time to the “Momoshima,” whose name sounds lovely. My idea for a logo design for Art Base Momoshima came from my vision of an island hideout for elite warriors.

Graphic/ editorial designer, logo and brand identity designer. Founder of “Glanz” from 2001. Recent design works include “Inujima Note” (2010), and “Jackson Pollock Exhibition” (National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, 2012).

I visited Momoshima for the first time in the summer of 2012. The island, surrounded by the calm waters and rich nature of the Seto Island Sea was both nostalgic and dynamic. As a way to keep this feeling with me and to pay tribute to the nature of Momoshima and its community, I am planning a project that will enable viewers to experience the island itself as a Gesamtkunstwerk. In order to transcend accumulated plans of the past and not be fettered by the definition of art, I have determined to build a location that will hint at new discoveries and experiences for a change.

After encountering one abolished school in Momoshima in the summer of 2010, we began its renovation, participated in events on Momoshima and interacted with local people, and finally came to inaugurate ART BASE. For ART BASE to be successful, I felt it was necessary to live on the island of Momoshima and actually become part of the local citizenry, so in 2011 I began life on the island. My intention is not only to support artists making Momoshima-specific works, but also to design new way of life for myself and for a new generation in search of a vibrant island culture.

Born in Kyoto, Japan in 1981. Received MFA from Hiroshima City University, Faculty of Art. Since 2006 has participated Hiroshima Art Project as a researcher of Contemporary Art and Theory.

I spent my childhood near the mountains and the sea of Shizuoka prefecture. Smelling the fragrance of Momoshima’s green trees of and its sea air reminds me of good times in my childhood. Via the website of ART BASE MOMOSHIMA, it would be my greatest pleasure to deliver information that refreshes your mind and stimulates your adventurous spirit.

I visited Momoshima for the first time in the spring of 2012 as a part of the Hiroshima Art Project staff and assisted in the planning and management of its inauguration in November. I was to be able to meet various local citizens, visitors, artists, and university students through ART BASE MOMOSHIMA, and I am looking forward to having the opportunity to meet more and more people in the future. It would be my pleasure to assist in the creation of a new community that enables you to appreciate the gentle natural world of the island and inspires you to return.

The culture of always buying the new instead of repairing the old has resulted in world overflowing with replaceable things that we value little. Manufacturers have less interest in what they produce and consumers less affection for what they own. And true definition of rich now means one and only although that is inconvenient. It will be my pleasure to assist artists who are visiting ART BASE in Momoshima, the island with no bridges.

Born in Kyoto, 1973. Gained experience as a carpenter in Nagano prefecture and left for Shodoshima in 2002. Worked at a local fruit garden and engaged in fruit growing. Studied organic olive growing. Currently living in Momoshima.

Involved in planning and management of the various Hiroshima Art Projects since 2007. We have shifted our activities from the center of the city of Hiroshima to the remote island of Momoshima, but the connections in terms of community remains unchanged. In this new location, surrounded by the sea and culture of the Seto Islands, art and life are joined. This new union becomes the central attraction of ART BASE. I would be pleased to see Momoshima develop as a unique synthesis of regional island culture and contemporary art.

Born in Hiroshima in 1982, lives and works in Hiroshima. Received MFA from Hiroshima City University, Faculty of Art, Division of Contemporary Art and Theory in 2007. Active in interdisciplinary coordination that crosses numerous cultural fields.
