During the exhibition "CROSSROAD", the third installment of the exhibition series "100 Ideas on Tomorrow's Island - What art can do for a better society" will be held on Momoshima Island. This is a unique exhibition which engages the resident islanders of Momoshima with the work of contemporary artists. This third installment also opens on Saturday 13th September. Taking place near Onomichi City in Hiroshima prefecture, on the island of Momoshima in the Seto Inland Sea, “100 Ideas on Tomorrow's Island” is an international contemporary art exhibition in an extraordinary location. Momoshima is hit hard by a declining birth rate, chronic ageing and depopulation. In this context, art may not only be a way to bring back more people to the island, but also offers a proposal for broader societal change: in which a group of artists exhibit together and collaborate with its residents, with the aim of giving new life to "tomorrow's island". For the third installment of these activities, young artists from Germany, the US, Japan and elsewhere have been invited to participate, totalling 9 groups of 13 people. With the natural environment and renewable energy as their theme, through residencies on the island the artists will be able both to develop an understanding of its daily life, as well as facilitate an exchange between island residents and those living far away from Momoshima. It is planned to exhibit the works produced through each party engaging with artistic processes and finding a way of working together. As you explore the art all around Momoshima island, we invite you to seek out your own hints and suggestions of a brand-new tomorrow.
