A project to transform the former Momoshima “Toei” theater into an art gallery
This is a long-term project to renovate the abandoned movie theater built in 1961. The aim of this project is to reuse the building to present artworks while respecting the original architecture. The renovation started in 2013. In summer of 2014, local residents were invited to the screening of “ Mothra vs Godzilla,” one of Godzilla film series released in 1964, who also enjoyed a first glimpse inside the renovated theater.
“Nisshokan” is a new name of the theater, presenting Yukinori Yanagi’s “Hinomaru Illumination” as a permanent installation.
